Sextants Discussion Group

Sextants Discussion Group is an information group devoted to sextants, and related matters. Members can contribute actively or just watch, as they wish. The group already has a wealth of information on how to:

  • Tell a real sextant from the flood of fakes seen on eBay and other markets.
  • Identify new or old sextants, and tell when the instrument was made.
  • Care for and use a sextant, as well as get repairs and spare parts.

The group isn't restricted to sextants; it also deals other instruments for measuring visual dihedral angles at sea, aloft, or in the field; the use of such instruments for navigation, surveying, and like purposes; and other related matters including marine and air navigation, surveying, and the industry and technology that produced these instruments. Everyone is welcome to post information and questions regarding history, specific instruments, sales, wants, etc.

The group is hosted on eGroups, a free, easy-to-use email group service. If you are interested, you can subscribe to the group in either of two ways. You can send an e-mail message (I don't think it makes any difference what it says) to: Sextants-subscribe@egroups.com

The other way is to click on the following URL or cut and paste it into the address window of your Web browser: http://www.egroups.com/group/Sextants

If you are not already signed up with eGroups for some of their other groups, you will be asked to sign up. They will ask you for a very little bit of information, of which only your e-mail address actually has to be correct. There is no other way to get access to this group except via e-Groups.

You don't have to reveal any more than you wish to the other members of the group. They can see a fragment of your e-mail address in the member list -- everything else is up to you.

PS "The Sextant Handbook" by Bruce A Bauer, Second Edition, 1995, is very informative. It has a chapter on "How to Buy a Sextant."
