Paul Cayard to skipper the Black Pearl...

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, scheduled to begin November 5, 2005.

The Volvo Open 70 design for Black Pearl
Disney's entry will certainly elevate global sailing event status (and sponsorship) through its tie in to the hugely popular movie and the two sequels currently in production. The Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006 will consist of 9 ocean legs and 6 in-port races, providing plenty of opportunity for exposure.  The race will start from southern Europe at 1400 on Saturday November 5, 2005 and the finish will be in the Baltic Sea on or about June 18, 2006 . The total distance is about 31,000 NM. Click here to go to the official website.

What's more, the yacht will be promoting the sequel in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga titled Dead Man's Chest and, yessirreee, our favorite pirate Captain Jack Sparrow will once again be extraordinarily portrayed by the one and only Johnny Depp. His misadventures will continue in the company of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly. They've been filming in Dominica and have recruited lots of cruisers and Carib natives as extras! What a dream...to become a pirate in the Caribbean. They had to suspend filming early because of all the tropical storm activity. #2 is scheduled for release in July 2006, the timing brilliantly coincidental with the return of the VOR fleet in time for promotional activity. Bravo Disney...it's just the shot in the arm that sailing needs!

Moreover, the third installment to Pirates of the Caribbean is already in production. Allegedly, it is to be called Pirates of the Caribbean: World's End, which I am certain will sit alongside The Curse of The Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest in our repertoire of must-have sailing movies! Rumour has it that Rolling Stone's Keith Richards is coming aboard to play Jack Sparrow's father. Brilliant! The perfectly ghastly piratical persona.

2 and 3 are being filmed back to back.
