When approaching Sag Harbor, please be sure to check the charts very carefully as well as the tides. The currents can run swiftly and there are several rocks at depths of only 2 or 3 feet (one off Nicoll Point) that are marked only by lobster buoys. There are also shallows off Mashomack Point and fishing nets in the vicinity of Majors Harbor on Shelter Island.

The charming village of Sag Harbor is nestled between East Hampton and Southhampton and faces toward Shelter Island. Sag Harbor is tucked way inside the South Fork of Long Island, with a mooring field and lots of dock space inside the breakwater at North Haven Peninsula, and a good anchorage just outside the breakwater between Sag Harbor and Mashomack Point. Anchoring inside the breakwater is prohibited. The holding in the anchorage varies with location as the bottom ranges from hard to soft to rocky, so be wary and watch your charts. Be sure to avoid the sand spit smack in the middle of the channel between Mashomack and North Haven, where the depth goes down to less than a foot. 

Noyack Bay on the other side of North Haven offers a huge anchorage area but the distance from Shelter Island leaves the potential for seas to build across the fetch in a northerly.  It’s also a distance from town.  On the other hand, with a soft bottom and water almost as clear as the Caribbean , it’s a terrific place to tuck in during a Southerly and a great place to swim on hot summer days.  Mill Creek at the southern end of Noyack Bay offers several marine facilities.  There is town dock and a boat ramp, with about 6 feet of depth in the approaches.

Inside, Sag Harbor is tight and busy.  The channel carries 8 to 10 feet of water. Don’t round the breakwater too closely, as the depth goes down to about 6 feet within 15 feet of the wall.  As you round the breakwater, Long Wharf is in line with the Windmill on land that houses the tourist office.  Stop in there for a map and events information.  Keep in mind that the harbormaster requires that sailboats with engines to be under power within harbor limits.  The harbormaster is on VHF channel 9. 

Transient berths with piles are available at the town marina on a first come first served basis.  There are no finger piers and the ladders are built into the bulkhead so scaling the wall can be a challenge.  Backing into the slip is advised.  The Sag Harbor Yacht Club and Malloy’s Waterfront Marina also offer slips (80 slips - transient, if available, showers, laundry, cable TV, phone service, restaurant, picnic area, WiFi).  Among these three facilities, they can accommodate vessels up to 150 feet, but we wouldn’t count on finding space in the middle of summer.  Sag Harbor Yacht Yard, which has no slips, does have the only haul out facility in the harbor.

Sag Harbor Cove is an option for power boats that can fit under the 20 foot bridge.  Inside are additional slips belonging to the town marina and an anchorage in which you can anchor free for the first 72 hours.  All the land along the cove is privately owned so going ashore here is not an option if you are at anchor. 

If you anchor out, you can use the marina facilities for a small fee.  The gap in the breakwater is wide enough and deep enough to let your dinghy in through the shortcut. You can park your dinghy at the town dock or on the beach west of the marinas and near the Windmill tourist center.

Entrance through the breakwater lets dinghies take the shortcut into town.
