Cold Spring Harbor

Cold Spring Harbor looks a little uninviting when first looking at the chart, but it is a very charming village, with fun shopping, a very interesting whaling museum, and some fine dining. The anchorage is just outside the main mooring field, and the holding is good for the most part. From there it is a dinghy ride in to town. There is a dinghy dock, which is owned by the local marina. They usually charge a couple of dollars to tie up there. The village is a few of blocks from the dock past a park dedicated to the Piano Man, Billy Joel. On the way there, you will pass a house with the most astounding gardens. A must stop and see.

We’ve often taken in Cold Spring Harbor for a daysail, especially if we have landlubber friends aboard. Of course, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a world class center for genomics and was the home of Watson, who along with Crick, and others, elucidated the nature of DNA. Some distance out of town is also a fish hatchery and aquarium.
